How to build a tile shower?

Building a tile shower can be a challenging task, but with the right tools and materials, it's definitely doable. Here are the general steps for building a tile shower:

  1. Plan your shower design: Decide on the size, shape, and layout of your shower. Determine the placement of the drain and the showerhead.

  2. Prepare the area: Remove any existing fixtures or tile, and make sure the area is clean and dry. Install the shower pan liner according to manufacturer's instructions.

  3. Build the shower curb: Build a curb for the shower pan using pressure-treated lumber, and ensure it is level and secure.

  4. Install the backer board: Install cement backer board over the shower pan liner, screwing it in place with corrosion-resistant screws. Make sure to seal all seams and corners with mesh tape and thinset mortar.

  5. Plan the tile layout: Determine the layout of the tiles, taking into account the size of the tiles and the location of any fixtures or niches.

  6. Apply the thinset mortar: Apply a layer of thinset mortar to a small section of the backer board using a notched trowel. Spread the mortar evenly, making sure to not cover the drain.

  7. Install the tiles: Install the tiles, using spacers to maintain the correct spacing between tiles. Use a tile cutter to cut any tiles that need to be trimmed.

  8. Apply grout: Once the tiles are in place and the mortar has dried, remove the spacers and apply grout between the tiles.

  9. Seal the grout: Once the grout has dried, apply a sealer to protect the grout from moisture and staining.

  10. Install fixtures: Install the showerhead and any other fixtures, following the manufacturer's instructions.

Overall, building a tile shower requires careful planning, attention to detail, and the right tools and materials. It may be helpful to seek the advice of a professional if you have limited experience with DIY projects or if you encounter any unexpected issues along the way.
